R and J

Some people in life always stick to the book. They never take chances

or go against the grain. Then you have the ones that go against all odds.

They follow their hearts wherever it may lead them.

Never looking back or asking what if…

In the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the interaction of love and hate is definitely one of the most predominant themes. Not only is the love vs. hate theme obviously shown between Juliet and her father, but also between Romeo and Tybalt as well as Romeo and Juliet.

Juliet and her father exhibit the ongoing struggle between love and hate. At the beginning of the tragedy Capulet expresses how much Juliet means to him and how much he loves her. Also, he conveys that he only wants what will make her happiest. Capulet says, “And too soon marred are those so early made. Earth hath swallowed all my hopes but she; she is the hopeful lady of my earth. But woo her, gentle Paris, get her heart; My will to her consent is but a part…” (778). Capulet is saying that Juliet is incredibly important to him and that she must want to marry Paris herself even though Capulet has agreed to it. Also, Capulet is telling Paris that he must win Juliet’s heart-- not be giv

Don’t always stick to the book or live life without taking risks. Instead, follow your heart wherever it may lead and never look back on the way!

The final example showing the interaction of love and hate is that of Juliet and her Romeo. At the beginning of the tragedy, Juliet is overpowered with hatred towards Romeo and is even more upset that he is such a good looking, yet bad person. Juliet says, “O serpent heart, hid with a flow’ring face…O, that deceit should dwell in such a gorgeous palace!” (827). Juliet has just seen and met Romeo at her father’s party and immediately thinks he is gorgeous; at the same time she thinks he is a terrible person whom she hates! However, as the tragedy progresses, their hatred is completely replaced with love and they even go as far as getting married. This shows they are willing to sacrifice their families, money, and life as they know it for one another. Romeo says, “I take thee at thy word. Call me but love, and I’ll be new baptized; Henceforth I never will be Romeo.” (798). Romeo is telling Juliet that he is will to completely change who and what he is just to be with her forever. Therefore, the love and hate theme was especially shown between Juliet and Romeo.
