Scarface
Scarface is a story about Tony Montana and his rise and fall living the American dream. Tony was one of over 125,000 Cuban refugees exiled from Cuba by Fidel Castro in 1982. After three months of living a camp for illegal refugees, Tony is offered a green card and a job in Miami if he assassinates one of Fidel Castro’s top men sent to America. He takes the offer and kills the man.He is now a full American citizen working as a dishwasher in Miami. He quits the job after being offered a better underground job. He must go buy two kilos of cocaine from some Columbians for Frank Lopez, his new boss. After the drug deal goes bad Tony proves himself by delivering the cocaine and the money to Mr. Lopez after killing the Columbians. Because of that he began to make a lot of money. Only a short time passes before Tony’s lust for power, money, and Frank’s girlfriend puts him at odds with his boss. He solves this problem by doing what he does best, killing. In America killing people isn’t tolerable, neither is drug dealing and money laundering. Now values clash and he is going against the norm of society. He is a minority opposing a majority and the majority will step in and force conformity on him. This is where he is arrested in attempt to imprison him to break him down and re-teach him American values. But he opposed his South American partner’s values too. Their values aren’t imprisoning and rehabilitating, their values are to find him and kill him. And because their values are more aggressive than America’s they stepped in and killed him before the justice system could get to him. The first topic will be values. Values are defined as shared beliefs about what is good or bad, right or wrong, desirable or undesirable. As a Cuban growing up in a communist country where everybody lives in poverty Tony will obviously have different values than the average middle-class people in democratic America. Therefore what Tony does may be wrong in American but tolerable in Cuban. In a communist country where everything you do is told to you and you work for nothing while living in a permanent state of poverty, America, or the American Dream is something many strive to achieve. So when Tony comes to America and takes advantage of this American Dream he brings his values he learned with him and relies on them to get through situations he encounters. Throughout his life he was taught hard work and because he lived in poverty he valued money. When he applied these values to pursuing the wealth
