lyme disease

Lyme disease (also known as Lyme Borreliosis) is caused by a bacterial infection that can be transmitted from infected ticks to humans and animals. It is the most common disease transmitted by an insect in the United States; however, can be found also be found all around the world. The bacteria that is infects these ticks (which in return infect humans or animals) is called Borrelia Burgdorfei, and once a human or animal becomes infected with this bacteria, it only takes a few days to develop the Lyme disease.

In different parts of the United States, two types of ticks carry the bacteria that can cause Lyme disease: Deer ticks spread Lyme disease in the northeastern and upper Midwestern United States, while Western black-legged ticks spread the disease on the Pacific coast (mostly Northern California and Oregon).

Lyme disease is on the rise in the United States. The incidences of Lyme disease have doubled in the U.S. since 1991. And while Lyme disease is transmittable to everyone, you chances of catching the disease are higher if you live in the northeastern, mid-Atlantic, north-central, or Pacific coast of the U.S. (because these areas are highly infested with ticks that carry Lyme disease) and/or are between the ages of five

Lyme disease can develop in several stages, and may cause different symptoms, depending on how long the person has been infected and where in the body the infection has spread. Early localized Lyme disease develops days to weeks after the person becomes infected. A red rash is the most common sign of early Lyme disease and occurs in 80% of cases. Flu like symptoms such as fever, chills, and headache may also occur in this stage of Lyme disease. Early disseminated (widespread) Lyme disease may develop one to four months after the person becomes infected. Common symptoms as this stage of Lyme disease include problems with the skin, joints, nervous system (pain and numbness, headaches, memory loss etc.), and/or heart. The final and most serious stage of Lyme disease is called Late Persistent Lyme disease. Symptoms relating to this stage also include problems with joints or nervous system. However these symptoms would not be develop until months or even years after the initial infection.
