The changes that Dr. Jekyll is going through, are, what soon to be the worst transformation and breakdown that persons body can cope with. Like Hyde, according to the physicians at WebMD, drug abusers have anxiety, nausea or vomiting, shakiness, sweating, confusion and irritability, feeling things on their bodies that are not there. When a person becomes addicted to a drug, they constantly want the drug, and become crazed upon finding it. Once Dr. Jekyll had taken the potion, it was only a matter of time until he became dependent upon it. After the first day of taking the potion, Dr. Jekyll says, “It was on this side that my new power tempted me until I fell in slavery. I had but to drink one cup, to doff at once the body of the noted professor, and to assume, like a thick cloak, that of Edward Hyde.” (Stevenson 109)

After prolonged use of the potion, it started to take over Dr. Jekyll in more ways than one, letting the evil Mr. Hyde out. He started to become violent, evil, and sneaky. He started to isolate himself from his friends (Utterson). The major change in Dr. Jekyll was that he began to partake in acts that he would never even consider if not for the potion. While in this Mr. Hyde state, or under the influence of this mind and body altering drug, his actions were becoming much like people who are “under” the same sort of drugs. The Marine Institute, explains that alcohol abuse leads to violence, accidents, social isolation, and difficulties at work and home. Much like people that have alcohol problems, Hyde had drastic personality changes, some blackouts, where he would not quite know where he was, and began drinking more and more for the same “high”. While under the influence of the potion, Mr. Hyde, committed a murder onto a innocent man. He explains:
