Despite many uncertainties that we may hold when facing disadvantaged individuals’ requests, Christian Discipleship has succeeded in requiring that we must assist these neighbors. Many people in today’s world question their obligation of helping others. However, biblical texts provide an incontrovertible message in which Christian disciples must support their neighbors. Additionally, the Bible states that our neighbors are not restricted to those that live in close proximity. In fact, as Christians we are taught to regard all of God’s children as our neighbors, regardless of familiarity. In light of this requirement, sacred scripture and the actions of Jesus Christ shed light on the impact of this obligation on our daily lives and guide us when faced with an afflicted neighbor. While many of us question our responsibility to one another, Christian Discipleship and the Bible have clearly summoned God’s people to be responsible for each other and eliminate suffering and poverty.

Sacred Scriptures unmistakably communicate that all of God’s people are compelled to help their neighbors. Actually, the Bible explicitly reveals that failing to assist the needy is a sin.

In light of the fact that we are responsible for helping our neighbors, the Bible also clarifies that our “neighbors” are not simply the people that we live near. James 2:1 challenges all Christians by saying, “As believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don't show favoritism.” In this second chapter, James stresses the fact that we must act consistently and kindly towards any person and not favor the rich or the poor. He states that simply helping certain kinds of people is not enough, because “whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it” (James 2:10). Thus, if we are going to follow the wishes of God and help the needy, we must not “stumble” if faced with a poor person whom we are not familiar with. When the Bible mandates that we aid our neighbors, we are actually called to help any of God’s children we encounter, because we must not show favoritism to some people, lest we would be sinning on an equal level of the rich man in the story of the rich man and Lazarus. In addition, James’ message is coherent with the actions and beliefs of Jesus Christ. Throughout his lifetime, Jesus helped all of the people that he encountered without showing favor towards a particular group. Since Jesus is the ultimate role model sent directly from God, we must also act without favoritism. Therefore, our neighbors are any of God’s children that we encounter in our lifetime.

The life of Jesus Christ, in conjunction with the message of biblical texts, presents insight about how to deal with our responsibilities towards our neighbors in the context of modern daily life. Throughout our lifetime, we are confronted with people that want some form of help from us. These instances occur daily and require us to go out of our way to help these afflicted neighbors.
