Utopian Vs. Distopian Novels
My topic is comparing the main points of focus in utopian and dystopian novels by reading Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 and Edward Bellamy's Looking Backward: 2000-1887.
2) What have you discovered about your topic so far?
So far, I've discovered that utopians and dystopians can be quiet similiar, both are perfect worlds for someone. Both are open to interpretation as each person has their own view of perfection. My perfect world, may not be perfect to you. So when reading the books, although I know which is considered the utopian, and which the dystopian I must keep this in mind.
Ray Bradbury's novel, first appeared as the 'fireman' in Galaxy Science Fiction, in 1950, and was later released as Fahrenheit 451 in 1979. The other novel I am reading is by Edward Bellamy, Looking Backward: 2000-1887. It is about a young aristocratic man, born into money who suffers from insomnia and is therefore hypnotized at night so that he can sleep. While one night his house burns down and he is assumed to have died in the fire. The main character is not found until the year 2000 and he finds this to be his perfect world. People are treated equally and their is no class system. The main theme behind the novel is that the world is too dangerous for anything less than a Utopia. So when he arrives in the year 2000, he could not be happier. In the forward, by Robert L.
