One of the romantic elements that is used by Hawthorne, is the love between Hester Prynne and Mr. Dimmsdale. This is why Hester decides to live in exile form the town. She understands that in the forest , society’s rules do not apply, which enables her to carry a different identity. By taking a different identity Hester escapes the harsh judgment that she receives because there is no one to protect her. The forest also allows for misbehavior, like Mistress Hibbins with the practice of witch activities. Everyone seemed to ignore the fact that she should be punished for witchcraft. “as the clamor of the fiends and night-hags , with whom she was well known to make excursions into the forest.” (Pg102) Although everyone was aware of her actions no one dared to punish, her because she was socially connected. She was protected by her brothers position as governor. Which proves how the Puritan society punished the weak.

Hawthorne, uses hypocrisy of others to show the true feelings of the characters, The author uses these elements to compare how not all sons are terrible. Some of them might have good out comes to them, and others might have tragic endings. Hester Prynne had to learn that she was a courage’s woman by the treatment of others not knowing that she had it in her all the time.
