The state dehumanized the people because they did not allow them to have any self worth. Every aspect of their lives was controlled. From using the bathroom to sleeping, one false move anywhere or one bad thought, and you could loose your life. The state did not allow the people to think for themselves. “It seemed to him (Winston) that it was only now, when he had begun to be able to formulate his thoughts, that he had taken the decisive step. Another one of the states’ control, was conformity. Everyone in the Outer Party had a standard way of dressing, looking, and even a standard menu from which they could eat. People wore overalls everyday. This took away from their individuality. As humans, being able to freely express yourself makes you the individual you are. When that is taken away all that is left is submission.

The state did not allow privacy. The Party’s idea, was that if you had to have privacy that you thinking bad thoughts. When Julia fell in front of Winston and put the piece of paper in his hand, Winston contemplated taking into the bathroom, for privacy, to read it but decided that was a bad idea. “For a moment he was tempted to take it into one of the water closets…there was no place where you could be more certain that the telescreens were watched continuously” (Orwell pg. 89).
