38 Witnesses
Another ordinary day in Queens, someone was murdered. But what made this murder case so interesting? Was it because the victim was a female? No. Was it because the killer was a black man? No. What made this case so interesting was that there were 38 witnesses to this murder and yet no one came to this woman’s aid or even called the police, until it was too late. Catherine Genovese was on her way home from work. She parked her car in her usual spot. But, this time she noticed that there was strange man at the other end of the parking lot. She began to get nervous and decided to walk towards the police call box that was just a few blocks away. But, before she could get to the call box. The strange man attacked her. She began to scream, “ Oh, my God, he stabbed me! Please help me! Please help me!” Windows began to open and lights from the apartments began to turn on. Her cries of help couldn’t be ignored. No one came out to help this young lady from her attacker. The only help that she received was a man saying, “Let that girl alone!” The attacker heard the man and began to walk towards his car. Leaving Miss Genovese struggling to her feat. But, the attacker realized that all the lights began to turn off and that no
According to the witness, they didn’t get involved because it wasn’t their business. In actuality it wasn’t their business because it wasn’t happening to them. So why should they get involved? Because it’s the moral thing to do? I guess the moral thing to do is: The people who witnessed the murder of Miss Genovese didn’t do anything wrong. Since they just did what their instincts told them to do. Which was not to get involved and put their life in jeopardy. If their instinct is telling them what to do, how can it be wrong? They where just following their instincts. Which told them to not get involved. one has yet come out of their apartments in order to help her. Go and fight off the attacker. Possibly getting stabbed themselves or even being killed in the process. Now, why would you want to risk your life for someone you don’t even know? The reason why no one did this is because they realized that their life is the ultimate value and should not have to put it in jeopardy for the sake for another person. That’s why no one out of the 38 witnesses got involved, either by placing a phone call or by even trying to stop the attacker. The reason being that if they did. It wouldn’t be in their best interest. Therefore they just followed their instincts. Which just helps to justify the ethical egoism concept. They all were just looking out for what was in their best interest, which just helps prove the point of ethical egoism. Therefore you shouldn’t have to risk your life in order to save the life of another. Because if you do then you are foolish and weak, since you obviously don’t realize your life to be the ultimate value. Therefore putting your life at risk. If you have on
