Family albums have played an important role as navigators of familial ideology and possessions of familial memory. Most family photograph albums contain a great variety of items, both identified and unidentified held together by this collective identity with the family. When family albums are put together we are reminded of our family history and possess sentimental ties within the family. Viewing photographs of deceased loved ones enables the families to manuscript their lives as they happened and to remember all the memories they had made. I believe that family photographs are form of cultural artifacts and express unity, emphasis, and coherence.

The unity of my family’s photo album has so much significance clustered into one book. All the events that took place throughout the history of my life are all kept together collectively. The album seems so insignificant to others, yet it carriers so much meaning to me personally. It is a united visual of my past and present life. It shows a way of communication and indicates how my family interacts with each other and our relationship among us.

Photographs pose as good conversation starters in my home allowing my family members, such as my future husband, to be introduced to my family customs and traditions. I see family photo albums continuing to be part of my life because I know that when I get married I want a wedding album to be made for me. By having a wedding photo album this once in a lifetime special day will be kept in my memory as well in my family history for the rest of my life and beyond.

Family photos serve as an artifact because photographs are the only biographical material people leave behind after they are deceased. Before I was born my great grandparents passed away and I was never given the chance to get to know them in person. However, to this day I feel that I know my great grandparents as well as I know my grandparents and parents. The reason for this is because there are many photographical memories of my great grandparents in my family photo album. When I was a little girl, my mom would sit me and my two sisters down and for hours she would describe the stories and memories that she had of my ancestors. Since I was fortunate enough to be able to experience this wonderful time with my family it is why today I feel that I am so united with the ancestors that I have never met. When I have a family of my own, I can picture myself sitting down along with my children and describing to them all the memories and stories that I have of my ancestors because of the time my mother spent relaying these memories to my sisters and I.
