What is Anthrax?

“A country already shaken by the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 is in a state of high alert these days because of the insidious spread of anthrax.” (Barry) I remember reading this on the front page of a newspaper. I’m not much of a reader so I turned on the TV and put it on the news channel, I was watching the news and all of a sudden they started talking about an outbreak of some type of disease. I had no idea what it was; I didn’t know the difference between anthrax and baby powder. I didn’t know where it came from, was it curable, how did you get it, was it contagious, can I prevent getting anthrax, did it all look alike, and was there only one type. Of course this really scared me, so I took upon myself to answer all my questions. To some of things I wanted to know. From all these questions I came up with one major question. What is anthrax and can the effects it has on the human body be prevented. I was later able to answer this question: Anthrax is an infectious disease caused by the spore-forming bacteria BACILLUS ANTHRACIS. If left untreated anthrax can and usually does result in death. Some companies have come up with new devices to prevent anthrax, and there is also a vaccine.

There is a vaccine for humans, that is 93% effective against anthrax. There is evidence that vaccination combined with antibiotics, could be effective for post-exposure treatment. (Frost) It is a cell-free filtrate vaccine, meaning it contains no dead or alive bacteria. Doctors can prescribe effective antibiotics, but in order for them to be effective, treatment should be initiated early. (DBMD) If left untreated the disease is fatal and usually results in death. Some people are so worried about getting anthrax that the take unnecessary medicine such as, ciprofloxacin (Cipro) and in this case taking Cipro as a prophylactic could cause much more harm than good. The antibiotic can have serious side effects including seizures, psychosis, and a severe intestinal disease. (Natural Health) It is recommended that no one take these antibiotics without being diagnosed with anthrax.

My first major article gave me a lot of information about recent events going on with anthrax. For instance, at first the government stated that the person sending anthrax-laced letters to news organizations and Capitol Hill was probably a “grudge-bearing, sociopath male laboratory nerd with knowledge of the geography of Trenton, N.J.” (Klaidman, Barry, and Hosenball 4) This really helped me a lot because I discovered where the recent outbreaks of anthrax might be coming from. I also found out the U.S. postal services are using up to date technology such as the electron beam irradiation of the mail. (Louise) As I further did my research I later found out that the anthrax laced letters were suppose to be tied in with someone in the Taliban. Then I later found that “military sources confirmed that anthrax traces had been found in several al-Qaeda training facilities.” (Novak, Viveca, and Mark) “Troops found 50 to 60 sites in the country where it seemed al-Qaeda was studying or trying to make and weaponize anthrax.” (Novak, Viveca, and Mark) Of course this left me confused. I also learned about a man named Stephen Leppla who studies anthrax. Leppla and his colleagues have dismantled the bacteria and rendered its toxin to a relatively harmless molecule. Leppla never intended to get involved in cancer treatment, but as he probed the mystery of how the toxin kills healthy
