Abortion

Many people have pondered upon the meaning of abortion. The argument being that every child born should be wanted, and others who believe every child conceived should be born. This has been a controversial topic for many years. However, I strongly disagree with legalization of abortion. In America, Thomas Jefferson stated the most fundamental principle of our developing nation when he wrote in the nations first document, the Declaration of Independence, that we were “created equal” and “endowed…with certain unalienable rights” and that among these rights was “life.” Since the beginning of time, we have striven as a nation to expand basic human rights for all citizens. Furthermore, there is still much to be done to fully improve this principle. As we continue to strive to achieve human rights, we must also defend it against those who believe that they can expand their own rights by destroying the rights of others. Babies, as people, merit the full protection of the law. Therefore, abortion should be illegal.

Today we have a greater concern, the concern of what is considered life. The life of a baby begins long before he or she is born. Dr. Micheline M. Mathews, from the Harvard Medical School

gave a confirming testimony that was supported by references from twenty embryology and other medical textbooks that human life begins at conception. At fertilization when the sperm and the ovum meet to form a single cell, a new human life is created. All characteristics of each person, sex, eye color, intelligence etc. are determined at conception by the baby’s genetic code in the forty-six human chromosomes. A new individual human being begins growing in the mother’s uterus at fertilization, and if the baby is not interrupted he or she will one day become an adult man or woman.

The vast majority of all abortions are done for social, not medical reasons. Has anyone ever discussed the downfall to having an abortion? Daniel J. Martin, M.D. Ltd., clinical instructor at St. Louis University Medical School has said, “the impact of abortion on the body of a woman who chooses abortion is always negative. I can think of no beneficial effect of a social abortion on a body.” The woman’s body that is pregnant is activated to carry out the function of nourishing a developing child. If this procedure of the reproductive system should be interrupted it can lead to serious complications. Many problems arise with such complications that can vary from physical to psychological.

On the contrary, many believe that abortion is the woman’s choice. The availability of abortion makes it possible for people not only to choose the number of children they want, but also to create the kind of family life they have always wanted for themselves. If a woman cannot choose to terminate an unwanted pregnancy, shi is denied the right to “possession and control” of her own body. One of the most sacred rights of common law is the ability to choose and if women can’t do this than their most i
