Abortion
It is nearly impossible to find someone who does not have an opinion on the issue of abortion, and usually his or her opinion is very strong. When people debate on the issue of abortion they become frustrated, and tend to become even more committed to their position, of pro-life or pro-choice. Both sides of the issue make good cases; an unwanted child is a horrible thing and yet the thought of terminating something that, if left to nature, would become a person is a thought not even the hardest heart could bear to think about. So where is the argument? Those who are pro-choice say that the decision of aborting an unwanted child should be left to the mother; otherwise it is an infringement of her rights. On the other hand, pro-lifers would say that abortion is murder of an unborn child and that it is infringing upon the rights of that child. Still, if one studied all aspects of abortion, such as the history of abortion in the United States, the way a fetus develops, how ab!ortion affects the mother, religion, and laws dealing with abortion, he or she would find that, in fact, abortion is murder. The definition of abortion in the 1995 edition of the Encyclopedia is the termination of a pregnancy by loss or destruction of a
On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court made abortion legal for the entire country, with a few limited provisions in the law. To summarize the case that started it all, Roe vs. Wade, a pregnant single woman, Norma McCorvey, brought a class action suit challenging the Texas criminal abortion laws, which said that abortions could only be performed by medical advice to save the mother’s life. The plaintiff said that prohibiting abortion at any time before the birth of a baby violated the mother’s rights to privacy. To make a decision on the matter, the Supreme Court chose to avoid the issue of when life begins, that issue is what the defense, Henry Wade, was pursuing. Based on that decision the court then ruled that the constitutional right of privacy was “broad enough to encompass a woman’s decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy.” In other words, the decision of abortion should be a private matter between a woman and her doctor. However, there is a hopeful twist to this case. Norma McCorvey never had an abortion; by the time the trial was over she gave birth to her child and gave it up for adoption. Today, she is not proud of the fact that she helped make abortion legal; she tried to commit suicide a couple of times and was very ashamed of herself. She has since become a pro-life Christian and works at Operation Rescue. So, if the woman who helped abortion become legal can see the light and change her mind, the courts should as well. Today, abortion is not as dangerous to the mother, but there is still a slight chance of critical problems arising. About two years ago, a teenage mother chose to abort her pregnancy. After the procedure was performed she experienced heavy bleeding, or hemorrhaging, and had to go to the hospital. While at the hospital, doctors found that the abortionist had left half of the fetus inside the young girl’s stomach. This is just one account of endangerment to the mother and shows why abortion should be illegal. By law a woman has up to her fourth month in pregnancy to get an abortion; in rare cases she can abort her pregnancy in the fifth month. Some women are unaware how developed the fetus is at this time; if they did know, most would never choose to have the procedure done. This is because, the fetus at four months is quite developed and can move its formed limbs allowing it to kick its legs, turn its feet, curl its toes, make fists, suck its thumbs, turn its head, open and shut its mouth, press its lips together, make complex facial expressions, and even smile. Also at four months an unborn child can urinate and breathe, if allowed air. The sex organs are apparent, the heart pulsates, brain waves can be recorded, fingerprints are evident, he or she has a liver that produces blood cells, the stomach produces digestive fluids, and the kidneys begin to function as well. However, there is one thing that is very disturbing in the growth and development of a fetus, which is that by four months the fetus is very sensitive to touch. This fact is disturbing because if he or she is sensitive to touch while in the womb, he or she has to feel something during the abortion pro
