Aenied Paper

Dido and Turnus both hold significant roles in the Aeneid with their opposing relations of love and hate to Aeneas in his mission. They are the two most important characters that stand in the way of the founding of Rome. Their existences both exenterate and hinder Aeneas personally as well as in terms of him seeking his destiny. Their deaths are necessary to bring closure in an episode in the Aeneid and allow Aeneas to free himself from responsibility with Dido and Turnus so he may found Rome.

Dido and Turnus both have a significant relationship to Aeneas’ mission. The similarly is that hey both hold extreme emotions towards Aeneas that brings them close to him and hinders him on his journey. Their emotions are both intense but completely opposite; love and hate. Dido does not wish to harm Aeneas’ mission until he leaves her and Turnus has ill wishes for Aeneas all along.

Dido is completely in love with Aeneas and holds very strong emotions towards him as she tries to make him stay with her in Carthage. “Deceiver, did you even hope to hide so harsh a crime, to leave this land of mine without a word? Can nothing hold you back- neither your love, the hand you pledged, nor even the cruel death that lies in wait for Dido?”

Turnus, comparable to Dido’s emotions are unwilled as well. Both Dido’s love and Turnus’ hate are not self-produced. Allecto strengthens Turnus’ rage for Aeneas. When we are first introduced in the scene between Turnus and Allecto, Turnus does not wish to fight Aeneas. “I am well aware that ships are in the Tiber- no need to conjure up for me such terrors. Queen Juno has not been forgetful of me” (VII 580-583) Allecto becomes outraged at Turnus’ remarks and later we see the immediate change in Turnus will to fight after he is effected by Allecto. “Insane, he raves for arms, he searches bed and halls for weapons. Lust for the sword and war’s damnable madness are raging in him and-above all-anger…”(VII 607-610) The encounter with Allecto alters Turnus affection towards Aeneas which causes his hate.

Both Turnus’ and Dido’s’ feelings are not self-produced and are created by the god’s influences. Dido has fallen hopelessly in love with Aeneas. While hunting together, they seek shelter from a storm in a cave and make love. Dido regards their union as a marriage, unlike Aeneas. Meanwhile, Jupiter and Venus have become impatient with Aeneas' long stay in Carthage and decide to take a hand in moving him on. The gods see that Dido is a delay and is impeding on Aeneas’ journey so they urge him on. Jupiter sends Mercury to order Aeneas to put to sea. But as he prepares his ships, Dido summons him and pleads with him to stay. But Aeneas won't listen; he values too much his duty to the gods and to his son and the kingdom in Italy he has been promised. As Aeneas puts out to sea, Dido, after promising unceasing war between her descendants and his, kills herself. Dido’s love for Aeneas cannot be considered natural. Venus and Juno willed Aeneas and Dido to fall in love so Venus sent down cupid to strike Dido with his arrow of love. Juno’s motive behind trying to make Dido and Aeneas fall in love with each other and make love in a cave was so that Aeneas would hopefully not leave Carthage, the land from which Dido lives. This action would prevent Aeneas from
