Affirmative action is in the classroom, work place, and in society everyday. In everyday society, does affirmative action need to be used? For a person to receive a smoother paved road because of their skin color is not justified. Even people intensely concerned about affirmative action, I said- whether for or against- rarely work hard to understand the arguments on both sides and to figure out how to persuade others (Edley 5). A minority with the same quilifications as a minority needs to have the same opportunities. Following the Civil War, Congress passed a number of laws designed to put former slaves on a rough par with white people (Urofsky 15). Affirmative action can benefit some. People who are of a different race have better chances of getting into a school. A student will be looked over a little harder because of their race. Schools that were predominately white, now have a more integrated body of students. They now have to go by guideline given to them. The admissions office will look into a minority’s life a lot harder. Tien claims that he has seen affirmative action work (Tien 54). You can recognize the diversity of students as you walk across the a campus. Students enter the college with higher test grades and scores than their predecessors (Tien 53). Tien claims the absence of affirmative action would deny talented youth acceptance into colleges and universities (Tien 54). Affirmative Action gives certain rights to people because of their race. This is racial discrimination and no race should ever be discriminated. Racism undoubtedly exists, but it no longer has the power to thwart blacks or any other group in achieving their economic, political, and social aspirations (D’Souza 525). Against positions for students should go to the person based on their qualifications and ability. Race should not be a contributing factor. Affirmative action promotes racial discrimination, which harms relations between people of different backgrounds. Affirmative action is used in society all of the time. Opportunities are presented to minorities that are not usually there. This can go both ways in a discussion. Do you think this is right in society? Loury 108).
