Akhenaton’s Hymn to the Aton
The New Kingdom’s Eighteenth Dynasty (1540-1293 B.C.), was an era for expansion of religious reform (Noble et al 28). “It was a time of opportunities and of conflict” (Noble et al 30). The passage “Akhenaton’s Hymn to the Aton,” written in Ancient writing was translated by John L. Foster with permission from the Biblical Society of Literature in 1995 Press. It was an enlightening and free spirited hymn that described the universal power of Aton. This hymn was written by “the pharaoh who wanted to transform Egypt’s religious practices into a monotheistic faith based on the worship of Aton, the god of the sun disk” (Homework handout 1). This ruler was no one other than Akhenaton also referred to Amenhotep IV during the time.In “Akhenaton’s Hymn to the Aton,” Akhenaton described, in Praise of the living Horakhty who rejoices the Horizonta in his Name if the divine Light which is in the Sundisk, living eternally and forever, the living Aton” (Brophy et al 63). “Aton was the personification of the sun’s power as manifested in the sun disk” (Brophy et al 63). He created the existence of life form on earth as well as things that are invisible to human eyes. Akhenaton described Aton as an incredible go
Finally, this hymn is to gain hopes, strengths, and worship to the sun god, Aton. Akhenton prays Aton for protection of himself, Nefer-Kheper- Re Wa-en-re and his royalty wife, Nefer-neferu-aton Nefertiti, who flourishes for eternity and everlasting (Byophy et al. 65). n beings” (Brophy et al 64). Akhenaton emphasized that Aton played an important role in developing a child. Aton had an ability to make a child breathe, “determine his nature and minister to his needs, and move about upon his own two feet when he emerges from it” (Brophy et al 64). Akhenton also stated that Aton created everything (life, natures, Earth, cities, roads, rivers, etc.) all alone. He made people unique by having different skins to determined different races of people. However, Aton created everything in his own desires. Aton made “the winter for cooling and the heat which ripens, sky far off to shine down and watch over all what he have created” (Brophy et al 65). According to Akhenaton, the creations of Aton was successful to which he wanted to follow. “Except for you son, Akhenaton, Nefer-kheper-re Wa-en-re, let him be wise with our counsel, your strength” (Brophy et al 65). The hymn also “ascribed the power to Akhenaton himself and shows some interesting parallels to Psalm 104 in the Hebrew Bible” (Brophy et al 63). Similarly, Akhenaton’s ruling and the reform of Aton, not only spread in Egypt but to other countries. “Contemporary literature suggest intense religious conviction in Aton
