Many foods and species have originated in the Amazon rainforest. Bananas, papayas, oranges, and pineapples originated there and have been extracted and domesticated for mass farming. When we season our food with black pepper or paprika, many of us do not acknowledge the fact that these spices also originated in the rainforests. Without the rainforests, our diets would be limited and bland.

With thousand of different plant, animal, and insect species living in the rainforests, when these forest are cleared, numerous species are destroyed. Destroying these species leaves the chance that a cure for AIDS or any other life threatening disease is also destroyed.

In addition to our diet, the rainforests have aided our advancements in medicinal treatments. Many species of the Amazon Rainforest have been discovered to cure many diseases and ailments. For instance, the cure for malaria “came from the natives of the Amazon Rainforest” (Hui); diabetes and childhood leukemia have been treated with “leaves from the rosy periwinkle” (Hui). Furthermore, the main ingredient in birth control pills came from tropical rainforest plants. From the plant species of the rainforest, the medical field has made advancements in its treatments of diseases.

For millions of years, the world’s rainforests have aided in improvements of lifestyles. From our daily diets, to medical discoveries, rainforests have impacted all of our lives. However, with our advancements, humans have come to exploit the resources we depend on so much. With these exploitation’s, we have caused global climate changes.
