“Warpaths” by Ian K. Steele, is the book I chose to read for my book report. “Warpaths” discusses the invasions of North America and the struggles that went on so that Europeans could gain control of the “New Land.” The book is broken into three main sections; Bases for Invasion, 1565-1684,Colonies and Tribes, 1687-1748, and finally Empires, Colonies, and Tribes, 1784-1765. In the course of my essay I will go through and discuss the strengths and weaknesses in each section. I will talk about the use of maps, illustrations and the references notes that are used through out the text. Ian K. Steele has the main objective in this book of creating a new image of how America was “created.” Steele takes an Ethno historic and military, perspective on the invasions of America. He presents a new and radical view of how things took place and the reasoning behind the events that took place. The lay out of the book is similar to that of a common textbook, which creates a strong structurally persuasive book. The multitude of sources used by Steele forms a feeling of security in the readers mind, as to the authenticity of his argument.

Before even getting into Part 1 of the book,

Part 3, of the book, moves forward with Empires joining in the picture. Also at this time 1748-1765 the invasion of the Ohio Valley begins. By this time Europeans had vast control over all of America, Indians where pushed westward and conflicts often erupted as European Empires forced there way west. Also at this time Europeans where making empty promises to the Indians that promised safety from further invasion of there land. Steele talks of British invasions on The French especially as the British moved into Ohio. By using great maps and illustration, Steele shows what land was fortified by the French and how the British moved in on it. Being the last part of the book Steele does a good job of closing the book with the last great strategically planned move of the Europeans, which took place in 1765.

Steele’s book “Warpaths” is highly creditable because of the number of sources he uses through out the book. In the back of the book they are all documented in their entirety, as a quick guide reference the number is located after the section of information that he got out of a source. In the back the chapter and the number allow you to location the information you need to obtain. The maps and Illustrations Steele uses do nothing but create a clearer picture for the reader and make a lot if the information more comprehendible. No real weaknesses are present in Steele’s book. His objective is clearly defined and he goes about doing exactly as he plans. He creates a new and more educated view
