Distance Learning
At the end of my speech, the audience will agree that distance learning is beneficial to American education. As you all know distance learning is becoming a very popular way to achieve Degrees from Universities, but is it beneficial to education? I would say yes it is very beneficial to my education. Distance learning has become a staple in education during the past few years. As our economy turns toward computers and Internet more and more, then the rest of our lives follow. The CQ Researcher, Volume 11, No. 42 Dec. 7, 2001 tells us that “More that 1,600 postsecondary schools offer some 54,000 Internet-based courses to an estimated 1.6 million students enrolled in online courses and degree programs, not only at traditional colleges and universities but also at institutions that exist only in cyberspace.” Americans today are busier than ever and without distance learning courses a lot of Americans would not be able to attend college. Critics say distance learning creates a cheating environment. I say distance learning helps students become more independent. Students are on their own. Therefore, if you are not a self-disciplined or motivated student, you will not do well in distance l
Distance learning classes are very convenient. You don’t have to worry about when you have to work late, when you get sick, or if you have any other problems. In traditional classes you have a certain number of times you can be tardy or absent, then it starts to affect your grade. With distance learning you don’t have to worry about that, unless you are a procrastinator and in that case you don’t need to try distance learning. Students now have access to education when they are physically distant from the campus. Distance learning makes learning possible for those who have tight schedules and cannot attend regular classes. I recommend trying a distance learning class to everyone. I would suggest you start off with a class that you know a lot about. This will help you get the feel for the program. Another thing that helps you is if you have one particular teacher who you can work well with, take as many classes as possible under that teacher, because you will be familiar with their teaching style and they will be familiar with your learning style. The distance learning classes that I have excelled in have mostly been with teachers that I have excelled with in seated classes.
