Although the protagonist disparages women and calls them "the lower race," he secretly acknowledges that he is more at ease in their company than in men's. the men in both stories have found themselves in unhappy marriages, where they become unable to relate to their spouses and grow apart from them Gurov himself reflects on how society seems to trap him: His mention of a "stunted wingless existence" seems to me to point to his spirit being unable to act on it
