Running head: AN ANALYSIS OF THE PUBLIC RELATIONS

This is a summary and an analysis of the public relations that are present at Charleston high school. Most of the information obtained is general knowledge or obtained through interviews. The analysis is accompanied by many recommendations for improving the school public relations.

Charleston high school is located in the east section of Charleston, Illinois. Charleston is located in east central Illinois and is also the home of Eastern Illinois University. Charleston has a population about twenty thousand people. Half of this population is college students. While EIU is a major university, it surprisingly does not greatly influence Charleston High School. The major composition of people in Charleston represent the middleclass socio-economic cohort. Charleston high school educates about a thousand students. Charleston High School does not have many different cohorts. One cohort that does peek its head through does so only in the faculty. It appears that a lot of the teachers are from the area. This seems to have made things stagnant in the past. Charleston High School has hired a new principal to take the place of Mr. Tucker who re


This lack of communication led to prompting about external forms of communication. Mrs. Goldacker stated that the school sends some materials into publication, but most matters or events that get into publication comes from the district office. One has to evaluate the message, not the messenger. This would mean analyzing how well the message is getting to the public. Ms. Patterson informed me of her niece that will be attending Charleston high school next year. While interviewing her, one could see that she was not familiar with Charleston high school like Mr. Broome would want. This began an in-depth examination of the Charleston high school’s public relations. It seems that Charleston high school lacks some of the major aspects to a school/community relationship. Mr. Broome seemed to want a well developed relationship, yet it seemed that he was also content with the one that the school already has. Many suggestions come to mind when analyzing the public relations of Charleston high school. The first has to be about the external communication or lack of it. Mr. Broome has to remember that if you are not supplying information, others will, and it may not be the information you want. He should reach out to the community before he needs them or it could be too little, too late! The best way to build relationships with the community is to involve community members in the school and with students and teachers. This could be extending learning centers. This might mean offering classes after school and in the evenings for parents and other community members. Mr. Broome has a “Principal’s Evening”, which he noted did not have exceptional results. Mr. Broome could try “Principal for a Day”, where community members are invited to come in and follow the principal around for one day to see how the school works.

Mr. Broome explained that in order to get the community to feel like a part of the school, the community has to be in the school as much as possible. Mr. Broome explained that the building needs to be as open to the public as possible. Charleston high school is actually the home of one of the local churches in the community. The principal also said that the building plays host to many events such as speech competitions, music competitions, or sport camps. Mr. Broome explained that almost anyone could use the building.

Mr. Broom also did not address a major issue in public relations for the school. When probed about school boards and communication, Mr. Broome seemed to avoid the question. Staff, faculty, parents, students, and board members can be your greatest allies in the community, but they need to be informed and educated about activities and eve
