Same Sex Marriages

Society has constantly evolved throughout history. That has never been more evident than in the past fifty years. Adult relationships have changed dramatically, with couples living together, interracial marriages, and gay and lesbian couples choosing to live their lives in the open, rather than hiding their relationship. Today the entire concept of marriage is different. Couples no longer choose to marry because they want children. The woman in the relationship has a completely different lifestyle than the women in the past. Most women are not in the shadows of their husband but are their equal partners. As these changes take place, more and more homosexual couples want to be a part of that society. Some argue that same sex marriages are morally wrong; however, it is even more immoral to deny them the same rights as heterosexual couples.

At this time there are no states that legally allow homosexuals to marry. Several states have tried to pass bills to legalize same sex marriages but all have failed. Based on the fear that some religious organizations have of these laws passing, the federal government in 1996 passed the Defense of Marriage Act. According to Chuck Stewart in his book

Gays and lesbians are penalized by the government. Not allowing them to marry denies them many natural rights that other citizens are allowed. They do not have the right to receive Social Security benefits from their mate; if a mate is ill, because of the Patient Rights Act, they may be denied access to the patient or information about their ill partner.

What has made marriage such a success is the ability for couples to change with society. As Ettelbrick and Feder state in their article in Insight and the News “Marriage no longer exists for the purpose of forging great dynasties or securing one’s lineage or keeping bloodlines clean.” Today people marry for companionship, love and security of family no matter how untraditional that family may seem to others in the community.

Statistics prove that if homosexuals were allowed to marry, the government and all citizens would benefit from the tax money they would contribute as a married couple. According to the National Tax Journal in an article written by James Alm, et.al. in June 2000 most homosexuals had earnings in the upper middle income or higher tax bracket. Filing single if a person made “$37,717” in one year their tax liability would be “$4,335.” If this same person married a partner that had the same income as he, the income would be “$67,434; filing jointly, the couple takes the marital standard deduction of $6,900 … and a couple income tax liability of $10,107”. If most homosexual couples were allowed to marry the government could be loosing as much as “$542 million” per year in tax revenue .
