Arab Isreali Conflict

I am going to be writing my research paper on the ongoing conflict between the Arabs and the Israelis. These two groups of people have been fighting from as far back in time that the history books go, but for my paper I will just concentrate on the past 200 or so years. This argument has its roots in religion. The Jewish people believe that land in Palestine is their holy land and is rightfully theirs. The Palestinians do not want to give up their land because they have been living there for hundreds of years and if it is the Jewish holy land it does not matter because they are there now. This is the main bases behind the conflict. There are also many underlying themes, such as, the Jewish people are a scattered people and they want a place they can call theirs, which is why they are also trying to claim the land in Palestine. Also the Palestinians feel threatened by the Jewish belief in Zionism. Palestinians think that Zionism will threaten their political aspirations. !

Another reason the Palestinians do not want to allow the Jews into Palestine is because they believe that the benefits foreigners receive are unfair.

First of all in my paper I will explain the background of these two groups of people. I will tell wher

Before 1948 Palestine was a very poorly governed, difficult place to live in. In 1880 there were less than 590,000 people living in Palestine. Of those 590,000 people 96% of the people were Arabs. And of that 96%, Muslims made up 90% of the Arab population in Palestine. The literacy rate of the people in Palestine was very low during this period of time. In 1880 the literacy rate was less that 5%, and in 1931 the literacy rate was only 10%. Warfare was very common to find among the small villages of Palestine. From 1876-1909 Abdul Hamid, an Ottoman sultan, ruled Palestine. Although he was in charge of what happened there was a small group of rich families who really had the say about what happened and when it happened in Palestine. The reason for all the trouble during this time was that the families did not care about what happened to all the villagers, they just wanted to make more money. These Palestinian notables also opposed Jewish immigration and land purchase because of fear of economic competition, and resentment of special privileges given to foreign residents. (Tessler) Also explicit anti-zionism developed throughout the Arab population of Palestine. Palestinians were afraid that Zionism would threaten their political aspirations. (Tessler) The Arab-Isreali conflict really does not start until the beginning of the Young Turk Revolution in 1908, which went up until the start of World War I in 1914. This also when the first significant stirrings inside the country of local Arab patriotism and nationalist political activity started to surface.

Besides losing their identities Jews had many other problems. For example, in Germany some of the restrictions that had been lifted were now being reimposed on Jews. In England it was not until 1858 that a Jew could be elected to parliament, not until 1870 that a Jew could enter a university, and not until 1890 that they were granted full citizenship. Also in Russia Tsar Alexander the II was just assassinated, and under his successor Tsar Alexander the III widespread riots soon began against the Jews. So as you can see the Jews had many other problems facing them, besides trying to reclaim their holy land.

In 1970 Arab Colonel Nasser passed away and Anwar Sadat took over the Arab forces and began rebuilding military power, with substantial support from Soviet forces. On October 6, 1973 Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack on the Israelis. This attack caught the Israelis off guard because the were in the middle of observing their most important holiday, Yom Kipper. The Arab forces were successful in the beginning, but when the Israelis regrouped they managed to force back the enemies. Egypt and Syria only achieved minimal territory gains. The United States Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, implemented what he called shuttle diplomacy. This shuttle diplomacy worked to ease tensions between the warring nations, they lived in a peaceful coexistence through substantial o
