Asian Women in America
Eastern and western societies have been in constant conflict with one another in moral and social issues. One recurring issue is the role that women should play in society. In America, the idea that “All men are created equal,” applies to both men and women. Women are given the choice to work and to be independent from their families, even without a husband. Asian culture still heavily insists that the right place for women is at home. Asia lacks the women’s revolution that swept across the West, especially the radical idea that women can live with out men. While women in Asia are extremely reserved and submissive to their husbands, Asian women in America have rediscovered themselves and gone beyond the shadow of men. The conventional idea that women should stay at home with the children is not outdated in Asia; instead, it is a way of life. If women are given opportunities to pursue careers, they are only expected to do well as nurses, textile workers, or teachers. This idea comes from the suggestion that women are more caring and detail oriented, that they are only good at certain things. The working wife is still expected to cook, clean, and care for children. Asian women in America must still live up to the s
ame expectations, except that they are not considered to be owned by their husbands. In Asia, a woman would not leave her parent’s home until she is married, then she would live with and care for her husband’s family. An unwed woman living on her own would be considered shameful and a disgrace to her family in Asian culture. The Asian American woman is more self-sufficient and takes part in making family decisions; she can be anything in America because America gives men and women the opportunities to choose their own destinies. Asian American women have the best of both worlds; they are free from the oppression of society and men, but they still bear the qualities of traditional Asian women. Learning when not to say too much and to be pleasing to one’s spouse is a quality that all women should have, but that does not mean that they should hade behind the shadows if their men. Men and women should both strive to be independent and at the same time show loyalty and devotion to their families. Asian American women are rediscovering themselves and are beginning to reshape the society that has been shaped by men. Asian men expect their wives to be loyal and obedient; this may sound more like a house pet
