At Home
Mom was in the kitchen cooking a Christmas Eve breakfast when I woke up. Through the aroma’s I could make out the smell of fried bacon, buttermilk biscuits, and Moravian sugar cake. As I drifted into the kitchen, still half asleep, Mom turned and smiled as I did the same. “Good morning, Charlie. Are you ready for breakfast? I cooked some blueberry pancakes for you and your brothers,” came cheerfully from Mom’s mouth. “I was going to wait for James and William to get out of bed.” Then I turned to Dad who was reading the paper in the den, “Dad, have you eaten yet?” “I ate a piece of sugar cake, but other than that, no.” “Oh, ok.” I then looked back at Mom and responded with, “I can wait, so we can sit down together to eat.” I proceeded into the den where I took a seat on the couch with Dad. I sprawled out with my head on my father’s lap, trying to go back to sleep, but he wanted to play. As he tickled me and I would try to fight it, but I never had any luck because of his strength compared to mine. “Quit,” I yelped with agonizing despair. “MOM! Get Dad off of me!” “Jimmy quit bothering him. He just woke up and I don’t want you to wake up the boys.”
“Well since it was my idea, it must be my fight.” “Dad, quit! This is between me and Charlie. He woke me up and now he’s got to pay.” “Jimmy, that’s enough of that, let them go. I retreated down the steps to an even more succulent smell of breakfast; meanwhile Dad was still trying to get James and William out of bed. “STOP IT! The food is ready. Now I want a nice peaceful meal with no arguing. Come on James, it’s not time to go back to sleep,” Mom exclaimed with that tone in her voice that you can tell it really is time to stop. All of us went into the kitchen and took a seat at the table. The food looked especially good; I don’t ever recall Mom putting that much effort into a meal between just us. “Who would like to say the blessing? Charlie you go ahead.” “Ok. God is good. God is great. Let us thank Him for our food. By His hands we now are fed. Give us Lord our daily bread. Amen.” There was no more conversation to be had until everyone had finished eating. Sitting there eating, quietly, looking at my family, it was the best meal of life. “The one in the dining room should be fine. Well, actually we can just sit here in the kitchen since we are going to use that one tonight. Make sure you get napkins. I also need some serv
