Do athletes engage in more deviant acts than non-athletes? In this paper, I will look further into this question. I will examine all levels from high school to the professionals. Sports are assumed by many to promote those character traits that are desirable by most in society. These qualities are fair play, sportsmanship, obedience to authority, and hard work .1 Are all these things true about athletes? Do athletes really make good role models?

There is a lot of debate on whether or not the use of drugs is a problem in the athletic system today. Over the years, it has become evident that athletes participate in deviant activities, and one of the main things that they partake in is the use of drugs. Alcohol, despite the increase in education and prevention efforts, remains the drug most widely used by high school students. Peer pressure also plays a large role in the amount of abuse that student do to their bodies. Many athletes try to duplicate what they see in the movies. For example, in 1995, a movie titled The Program came out. It was about a football player whom everybody loved. He partied, drank, and still played well when it was time to. There was a

The second case is involving a man named Ray Lewis. Lewis is a linebacker for the Baltimore Ravens. He also is a millionaire. He now faces murder charges as well. One day, he was with his friends, who ended up killing someone. Lewis said that he had no clue what was going on. He claims that he didn’t even know that they had any weapons on them. This case is also still under review.14

About a year later, Simpson was found guilty in the civil suit, and he had to pay the families a lot of money. Did O.J. get off because he had money, played football, and he could buy the best lawyer that there is, or did the jury really think that he was innocent?

It was when the main character (quarterback) went out and laid in the middle of the streets to prove that he could handle being under pressure. The first weekend the movie was out a high school student athlete wanted to prove to his mates that he can go out drinking, and still handle the pressure of lying in the middle of a busy street. Well, that did not go to well. The student was killed and the movie was pulled out of the theaters and scene was edited out.2

Athletes are more likely to take drugs that enhance themselves physically and psychologically than those people that do not participate in sports. Many of the drugs that athletes choose to use are stimulants and many drugs have anabolic effects. Some examples of the substances and their effects are: Amino acids, which stimulate natural production of growth hormones, amphetamines and cocaine which make you think you have an increase in strength, alertness, and endurance, caffeine which reduces fatigue and many more 6.

Orlando Brown of the Cleveland Browns is getting charged with assault for an incident that happened in the middle of a game this past year. Brown committed a penalty right in front of a referee. The referee too a flag and threw it right at Brown’s face. It went inside of his facemask, and hit Brown square in the eye. Brown flipped out, and for good reason. He ended up pushing the referee, and then got thrown out of the game. He was kicked out for the rest of the season, and some of the next season. Brown had to have surgery on his eye to help restore his vision. Brown got charged with assault! I am not sure if that was right, or if just because he didn’t live up to the role of being a role model, he got penalized.11
