The story of Atlantis begins quite literally with two of Plato’s dialogues, Timaeus and Critias. These accounts are the only known written records that refer specifically to a Lost Civilization called Atlantis (Keyes). One would think how could so many people believe in Atlantis if there is only written records from one man telling that it exists?

Some people who do think Atlantis exists do not think it is in the Atlantic Ocean and they have good reason to think that.

“Plato’s dimensions of Atlantis makes the continent about 5-10 square kilometers, about the size of Brazil or the United States. This massive region cannot be hiding in the Atlantic Ocean, because it has been scrutinized down to the metric scale by both American and Russian Oceanographic ships. The same is true by both the Pacific and Indian oceans which have both been thoroughly scanned. So, an Atlantis of Plato’s dimension has to be found elsewhere or nowhere at all (The Church of Y Tylwyth Teg).

To wrap it up Atlantis could have definitely existed and it got buried under sheets of Earth in which no one could discover it. But, that is not likely in this case. One would think Atlantis is just a legend of a culture or a confusion of Plato. Although he is very smart he is a human being and he can make mistakes. In this case it is probable that it was his mistake and a pretty big one. At first, the thought was that Atlantis existed, but maybe it was just a childhood happy fairy tale thing that made me believe in it because it would be "cool" if it really did exist. But, from researching about the topic my true feelings are that it does not exist and that a lot of people are wasting their time trying to find it.

Some people do believe that Atlantis did exist and they have pretty good reason to, one reason is this. All of the pieces of the continents fit together pretty neatly to form Pangaea that many scientists say once existed. But, in one part in the North Atlantic it looks like a piece of land is missing about the size Atlantis is said to be and in the location Atlantis is said to be (Stein 63,64). That is a pretty good point if it is in fact true. There are some other good reasons that people believe Atlantis existed such as this one. There is nothing improbable in Plato’s narrative about Atlantis’s dimensions and Plato describes hot and cold springs in the center of Atlantis, a feature common to volcanic islands and it is probable that Plato did not know this at the time (Atlantis: We will never know). This fact is important and deserves much thought. It is very likely that Plato did not know that much about volcanic islands so it could be true that he saw springs in the center of and island, but it might not have been Atlantis. It could have been Thira or some other island with volcanic activity. Plato might have been thinking the island of Thira was Atlantis all along. No one knows what could have made him think that but one would think it is possible.
