In Gilman’s “Making A Change” the young Mrs. Gordins (Julia) is a repressed artist who chose married life over her musical talents. As a young mother she chose to give up her music for her husband and in order to care for her child. She had been a passionate musician before her marriage, had given lessons, and her talents were one of things that drew her husband to her. However, Mrs. Gordins is unhappy in her life situation. She is completely devoted to raising her son and caring for her husband, unfortunately something is missing. Her mother-in-law offers to care for the baby yet she turns away from this idea and insists on taking responsibility for all of his care. She is even insulted when her mother-in-law suggests letting her watch the baby. Julia is unhappy and misunderstood and obviously depressed. She obviously sends signals to her husband that he does not receive. Julia, like many depressed woman feels she has no way out and tries to take her own life. Her mother-in-law, whom at first appeared not to care much for Julia, saves her life and forces her to make a change. Julia’s life takes a turn for the best after her tragic decision that almost ended her life. Like a fairy godmother, the elder Mrs. Gordins takes Julia under her wing and sets up a plan in which she knows Julia will be happy. They decide to start working, Julia giving music lesson, and Mrs. Gordins caring for children. They are able to bring money into the household and earn a certain amount of responsibility and respectability. Immediately their attitudes, behavior, and general outlook change as they are doing things that truly make them happy. Julia is happy and full of life to have her music back and even begins to play for her husband again. They go about their plans without telling Mr. Gordins yet he eventually finds out by accident. He did in fact notice the great change in his wife and mother and was thrilled by it. When he found out the reason for the change he knew how happy it made the two women to be working that he could not even be angry. The two women in this story choose to do what makes them happy and gives them satisfaction only after a near tragedy. Like a fantasy come true, Julia finds a successful way to incorporate her art into her life, which is ultimately what she needed.

11. It is often the fact that an artist who is wishing to express herself is not giving the chance to thrive under many circumstances. At times, their environment, family, or society is unaccepting of their lifestyle, or their art as a whole. In Alice Munro’s “The Office” the heroine of the story works in an environment that is so harmful to her she ultimately slips into depression and doesn’t even want to work. Edna Pontellier in Chopin’s “The Awakening” faces such opposition from her husband and ultimately her society that she feels she has no choice but to take her own life. In Alice Walker’s “Everyday Use,” Maggie’s sister tries to hold her back from her artistic tendencies, simply because she isn’t very smart.

Emily in Tillie Olsen’s “As I Stand Here Ironing” is hindered artistically in a different way, yet she still thrives. Her familial attachments and circumstances surrounding her family, which was out of her control as a child, had their ill effects on her. The story is told from her mother’s point of view and she is going back in time, perhaps trying to justify some of the mistakes she made in bringing Emily up. It appears a school figure of some sort contacted the narrator and wished to discuss Emily. The official says, “She’s a youngster who needs help and whom I’m deeply interested in.” At this point, her mother feels she has done all she can, whether good or bad to help Emily. She says she has spent 19 years outside of her body and all those years of life have happened beyond her. Perhaps she would like to regain some of them back and do some things over.
