Beowulf
The aging process is more than a physical change. It involves a heightened awareness of one’s own mortality. This process is evident in the story Beowulf in which the hero Beowulf battles three monsters: Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the fire dragon. Through these battles, he changes from the young, fearless warrior believing in his invulnerability to an aging warrior knowing his time has come to meet his last challenge. As a young hero, Beowulf battles the long-time adversary to King Hrothgar and his kingdom. As a young hero, Beowulf reflects characteristic such as being cocky, having an alter-ego and over confident ‘have watched me rise from the darkness of war, Dripping with my enemies’ blood. His duty as a warrior and his ego keep him ready to engage in conflict, but his changing physical needs bring him face to face with his own mortality. Beowulf was a story showing the physical changes that a warrior goes through and the changes that all go through when faced with the aging process. At the beginning Beowulf was impatient and cocky “proclaiming that he’d go to that famous king”. Later in the story he became more mature and his assistance of others and knowledge of self was apparent when he was to ward’s middle age “of being worn to war it would earn no glory”. His duty as a warrior showed when he thought about the warfare of his people before himself. Beowulf died in the story but let it be told that he did not die trying to fight a battle.
