Biotechnology
The reason why I choose biotechnology for a subject to do my paper on is because I have a strong interest in the subject matter. When I was in high school I read a book called “Brave New World,” by Aldous Huxley. It was written in 1931. It was a story about a world controlled by biotechnology. Everyone was a clone and their standing in society was dependent on what they were breed for. It was a perfectly formed society. It was at least until the one thing that kept the lower class citizens happy ran out. Now that cloning has become a reality some people think the we are about to enter a “Brave New World.” A world in which genetically engineered clones will be the only thing that exists. That is one of the reasons why biotechnology has become one of the most popular topics in society today. Even Hollywood has taken advantage of this with blockbuster movies like “Jurassic Park.” In this movie a genetics company named InGen recreates dinosaurs through fossilized DNA. They build a park to show off their patented genetic creations. But they did not know what they were dealing with and the dinosaurs escaped and took over the park. These are just two fictional examples of t
Biotechnology has greatly affected society in many ways. Like I stated before it has greatly impacted the medical field. Cloning, if it ever became legal to do on humans it would greatly impact society. On March 4, 1997, President Clinton issued a directive that bans the use of federal funds for any cloning. President Clinton said this as his statement to the public, “The federal government currently restricts the use of federal funds for the research on development of human embryos. After reviewing these restrictions, our administration believes there are loop holes that could allow the cloning of human beings if the technology were developed. Therefore today I am issuing a directive that bans the use of any federal funds for any cloning of human beings. Effective immediately, no federal agency may support, fund, or undertake such activity.” he possibilities for biotechnology in the future. Both of these ideas have already been pondered by scientists. This paper will examine the things biotechnology has done for society already, the things that might be possible in the future, and the affects it has on society. Now that we have examined some of the things biotechnology has created, some of the possibilities for future, and how it affects society we can better understand its importance. Biotechnology is the science of the next century. It has the ability to solve many of the worlds problems. It also has the possibility of causing new ones. We as a society will have to determine step by step which aspects of biotechnology we will accept as okay and which ones would be tampering with nature to much. Biotechnology has already impacted society in many ways and the future should bring about new discoveries in this field that will impact our lives on a daily basis. Dolly may not be important to an individual but what if the sweater that individual is wearing is made from wool of a cloned sheep. As a society we must be prepared the small things like that and all other aspects of biotechnology as we enter this “Brave New World.” Cloning could one day be used to improve humans and some people say that it is man “playing God.” Genetics is basically changing life itself and the way nature intended it. Nature is balanced a certain way and when y
