Bob Dylan

One of the most popular political figures in the 1960's was Robert Allen Zimmerman, better known as Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan recorded many protest songs, perhaps the most famous song, the song which made him a well known name, was The Times They Are A-Changin. A song written about government uprising and protesting the Vietnam War.

Born in Duluth Minnesota, Roberts early childhood was pretty normal. His family moved to Hibbing Minnesota, seventy miles from Duluth, when Robert was seven years old. Hibbing was Mrs. Zimmerman's hometown. When Robert was interviewed, he said that the whole town of Hibbing was mainly his family. His mother's mother had a dozen children, all of whom stayed in Hibbing and raised their families there.

Robert bored easily. Later, they would find that Robert had a severe case of Attention Deficiete Disorder. He did not understand their Jewish religion and instead of taking the time to understand, he rebelled against it. Instead of spending time learning about his religion he became interested in music. He received his first guitar when he was ten years old. His family had little money and could not afford an amplifier so instead Robert taught himself how to play the guitar by standing

After he recuperated from his accident, Bob Dylan went on to publish his first book "Tarantula" and star in his first movie "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid." The movie was a failure but the soundtrack which Dylan recorded was a huge success. He followed that soundtrack with another success in 1973 "Knocking on Heaven's Door."

His travels eventually brought him to New York City in December 1960. He played at three or four different hangouts a night to earn money. He expanded and started to play in Boston as well. He played everyday for hours and eventually better known musicians wanted him for backup. By this time he had taught himself the guitar and harmonica and was considered one of the best. His talent caught the ear of David Van Ronk a fellow musician. Van Ronk was born in Brooklyn in 1936. In 1949, he sang in a barbershop quartet playing jazz and scat. He became a professional performer in 1956. David Van Ronk taught Dylan most of what he needed to know about performing. Van Ronk's wife, Teri, became Dylan's first manager, booking most of his gigs. When Dylan outgrew his friendship with Van Ronk, David became cynical because Dylan went off and made a lot of money with what he had taught him.

Through the friendship with David and Teri, Dylan had the experience of meeting many different singers and musicians. Two of the musicians he met were Carolyn Hester and Richard Farina. They liked Dylan's harmonica playing so much that they asked him to play backup during a recording session. This led to Bob Dylan's first recording contract as a solo singer/musician. Dylan's debut album with Columbia was called Bob Dylan and was released in 1962.

Teachers and students who were later interviewed about the concert had said it was the most shocking act to hit the stage. Hibbings was a small town and the music Robert and his band played was the first rock and roll music the townsfolk heard. The band broke up after their first performance, leaving Robert to practice alone.
