The Spaniards first founded California when they wanted to increase the Spanish land area. But not many Spanish wanted to live here because of Indians. Then later Mexico fought for California and controlled the land. Then California was officially made a part of America when The Mexican-American war ended on February 2, 1848. Nine days later gold was discovered at Sutter’s hill. Then a gold rush swept the Americas. Because of this California’s population soared. One of the main cities in California and the capital of California is Sacramento. It is the marketing and manufacturing center for the northern part of the great Central Valley. The Old Sacramento Historic District along the river is a collection of restored buildings dating from 1849 to 1870, the period of the Pony Express and the gold rush. Also, other attractions for tourist include the California State Library, and the governor’s mansion. Also the Indian museum at Sutter's Fort State Historical Monument is a top attraction. One of the two dominating cities in California is Los Angeles. It is the largest city in the state. It also passed Chicago to become the second largest city in the world. Fresno is the raisin capital of the world. Fresno is found in the San Joaquin Valley. It lies about 184 miles south east of San Francisco. The Spanish and the Mexican did not settle Fresno because it was so hot. In the 1860’s it was settled by the Dutch. Then a railroad was built and it went through the city and from then on the population of Fresno soared. Marcus Allen was born in San Diego, California. He played for the Kansas City Chiefs. Marcus was the most effective when he was going to Southern California University. He led the nation with all-purpose yard with a game average of nearly 180 yards. He also set a NCAA record as a senior with2,432 rushing yards in a season. He set record for most 200-yard rushing games in a year with 8. Also the highest average rushing yards per game with 212.9. The band Blink 182 originated in California. The band was formed sometime around 1990. Mark Hoppus the lead singer and the guitarist was born in L.A. The bass guitarist, Tom Delonge was born in L.A. also. The drummer Travis Barker was born I elsewhere which I couldn’t find but later moved to L.A. were he replaced the old drummer. In 1955 Walt Disney opened one of the first large theme amusement parks. Disneyland was opened! Disneyland is in Anaheim California. It is nearly 180 acres. It draws several million people to it a year! Disneyland is one of the best tourist attractions in the world. The Golden Gate Bridge is a well-known symbol of San Francisco. It is admired because of its gracefulness and its utility. The bridge began to be built in 1931. Although it was not opened until May 1937. This is one of the largest suspension bridges in the world. It covers a two-mile gap connecting San Francisco with the rest of California.
