Casablanca

Love is the most terrible, and also the most generous, of the passion; it is the

only one which includes in it’s dreams the happiness of someone else.

Throughout history men have always had some one they admired. More often or not it has been a man’s man. Before Brad Pitt, there was James Dean, before Dean there was Old Blue Eyes and before Sinatra there was Humphrey Bogart. Bogart solidified his manhood in Micheal Curtiz’s Casablanca. Rick Blane is the kind of character that woman would die for and men would kill to be. This is shown when Captain Louie Reno says to Victor and Ilsa that Rick is the kind of man that if I was a woman I would be in love with.”

Before Rick Blane was introduced to the world, most male characters were more courteous and seemed more idealistic. In creating Rick, Bogart changed the premise of being a tough guy. Rick is the kind of man that no matter what, you have to respect because he never gave a reason why you should not.

He is a thinking man, this is shown when Rick is first introduced, when he is playing chess with himself. Rick’s whole life has been a chess game.


Unfortunately like every other tough guy whether in the movies or in real life they can be brought down by true love. Rick throughout his introduction shows that no person besides Sam, really matters to him. Rick loses his whole image all because of one song. Following the song Rick sees Ilsa and the game that Rick calls his life changes. Ilsa makes him question himself, and that is why he sits at the table and drinks with his guests. He is so confused that he resorts into drowning his sorrows into a bottle of brandy, while questioning why “of all gin joints in all the towns of the world she has to walk into” his.

From his days in New York City, to selling weapons in Ethiopia, to even living in Paris and toying with the German Military, while he was blacklisted. Rick even puts his king in check when he jokes about leaving the German’s a note on where he would be.

To be tough guy you must have all of these qualities that are listed above. You have to walk with confidence, treat everyone with respect and be willing to make sacrifices for what really matters in life. Rick is a tough guy but more importantly he is an honorable he
