Causes of the Civil War
The primary cause of the Civil War has been a topic debated for years because there were many causes of the Civil War that were intertwined together to produce the most devastating war in American History. The primary cause of the Civil War was not states’ rights; the primary causes of the Civil War were the expansion of slavery and sectionalism. Although the issue of states' rights, the existence of slavery, ineffectual leadership, and each region's perceptions of the other's intentions contributed to the war, none of these issues were a main cause of this historic event. The expansion of slavery and sectionalism were primary causes of the Civil War because they created more tensions between the North and the South over slavery in the west, and the industrial and sectional differences between the two areas. The issue of states' rights does not qualify as the primary cause of the Civil War because it only created some commotion over tariffs and the rights of territorial governments in the West. Although the existence of slavery was a crucial element in the events leading up to the war, it was a long-term cause of the Civil War and therefore cannot be recognized as a primary cause. Each region's perceptions of the other's intentions contributed to the sectionalism with the perceptions of how each region thought about the other region. The North thought the existence of slavery was fine but that the expansion of slavery throughout The expansion of slavery was a primary cause of the Civil War because it created anxiety between the North and the South over which new territories in the West should be free states or slave states. The first major debate over the expansion of slavery was when Missouri wanted to be a slave state upsetting the balance of free and slave states. The North proposed that Missouri could only be a free state by obeying the Tallmadge Amendment. The Tallmadge Amendment asked Missouri to prohibit more slaves from entering Missouri and the gradual emancipation of slaves already living there. The South was infuriated because then Missouri would be a free state giving the North more states then the South. This debate was one of the last compromises because Maine wanted to join the Union as a free state; therefore, keeping the balance of free and slave states. The Missouri Compromise also stated that states south of Missouri would be slave states and states north of Missouri would be free states. Declaration of Independence had promised. The crises of the 1850's increased the tensions between the North and the South over the Fugitive Slave Act in the Compromise of 1850. The act said that blacks that had escaped from slavery had no trial by jury and should be sent back to their master immediately. The North got very irate when southerners came to the North to pursue fugitives who were not their slaves. Many northern states passed personal liberty laws to interfere with the deportation of slaves. The South got infuriated once again because the North did not adhere to the conditions of the Compromise of 1850. At this point the South felt that they needed to secede from the Union because the North was further subjugating their ideas.
