Censorship of pornography continues to be a controversial issue; many arguments have been generated by this topic. I believe that censorship of pornography is wrong. Pornography is simply a depiction in words or pictures of sexual activity. Advocates of pornography claim it is a form of sex discrimination because it reinforces an inferior image of women and thus harms women’s status. They argue that pornography also leads to physical abuse of women by increasing male aggression towards them. I believe in safeguards that restrict the access of certain sexually explicit material which some refer as “hard-core pornography”. The First Amendment of the Bill of Rights allows us the freedom of speech, or of the press. When this was written over 200 years ago our founding fathers couldn’t have imagined the degree to which these words would be taken.

We are a sexist society and most images of women are going to contain at least some sexist attitudes common to both men and women. Women have the right to sexual expression. They have chosen to participate in porn, and most view their bodies as a work of art. The claim that men become violent after exposure to porn is based on a speculation. There are no proven facts that show that men rape or beat women because they have seen it in a movie, read literature, or viewed images of art. There is no proven connection between violence and pornography. Sexism, rape and beatings of women by men existed before widespread modernization of porn. In many western European countries, after legislation of pornography had been brought into effect, sexual crime figures did not increase.
