Cesar E. Chavez

When a person hears the name Cesar Chavez, a person thinks of a man’s fight for his people. As a fellow human being I am proud that he was Hispanic just like me. Well for me he wasn’t a regular Jose but someone with the power and strength to say I had it with what was going on, for that I call him a wonderful and brave man.

The story of Cesar Chavez begins in Yuma, Arizona. He was born March 31,1927. Cesar Estrada Chavez was names after his grandfather Cesario Chavez. As a small child Cesar learned many things. As a child Cesar learned first hand how hard it was to be a brown man in a white man’s land. Cesar’s family, The Chavez family, was swindled from their house and farm by dishonest whites. Cesar learned a lesson about injustice that he would later in counter. Cesar said “the love for justice that is in us is not only the best part of our being but it also the most true to our nature”. Like I said this man had the mentality of someone you read in “LA OPINION”. In my dark eyes Cesar was “the Mexican”, white people feared him left and right and prayed that Cesar would look the other way or they would loose their fortune. To me that is an accomplishment beyond a lot of people’s reach. As a

Most of Cesar’s life he spent in farms. He had a love to it; he said it was his second love. As life would be he died in one a couple of miles from he first took his first breath. He died April 23, 1993 in Yuma, Arizona. H e was found dead in his bed. He died naturally well that’s what the report said. His lost was felt throughout the Hispanic community. Many people like my father look up to who he was and for what he did witch affected us. Any person who my daddy looks up to is a great man. He was a great man and his words still live within the Hispanic community. I wish he still was here but I guess god needed him up there as well. “He died standing up for their first amendment to speak for themselves, He believed in his heart”, said UFW president Arturo Rodriguez.

young child Cesar did not like school that much, I mean I don’t either, but his reasons were much better that mine because all of the teachers were Anglos and only spoke English, and that wasn’t it, if the school staff caught u speaking Spanish they would hit you with a size 12 inch ruler. Cesar and his brother attended from 38 schools to 70 schools. Cesar only graduated from the 8th grade and could not attend high school because his father, Librado, had an accident and could not work because of it. So as the oldest child of the family Cesar put away his plans for the future to support his family both mentally and physically. As Chavez grew older he started back his journey in academics. He later believed that “the end of all education should surely be service to others”. In 1944 Cesar Chavez joined the navy. In the navy as well we encountered racism. In his words he remembers being treated different because of his background. After serving his country Chavez married Helena Fabela in 1948. Throughout their marriage they had 15 kids together. As well as being a fighter he was the man! Chavez was a man witched listened to hid head and heart. He was very interested in reading St. Francis and Gandhi’s work. He studied their actions toward some of the obstacles they encountered. All of Cesar’s life he was the next-door neighbor to discrimination. He wasn’t the only one. During that time in the great United States there was racism not just toward Mexican Americans but as well as African Americans. It wasn’t just those two nationalities but anyone that was different. I mean why were people like that and still are. Really does a 7 yr old non-white child has the blame for being Mexican. That’s what worries me to live in such a beautiful country like the U.S., it is beautiful and all but sometimes it isn’t the best place to live because of conflicting nationalities. Cesar Chavez Had no choice to be a farm worker that was the only position open to a Mexican like him, he had a family to support so he didn’t have the choice. As a farm worker he knew how hard it was to be a fa
