Throughout the play, Hedda is the character that needs to have complete control at all times. This concept, of a woman being in control, is very different from what most plays were like. As a rule, the woman was told what to do and when to do it. Another difference was that there is much more of a realistic plot shown in Hedda Gabler. This play takes place in a modern day setting as apposed the magical woods setting that is demonstrated in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Which is a play that portrays the tradition of a male dominating figure. Oberon, Egeus, and Theseus all have much dictatorship over the rest of the community in which they live. So it is obvious to see how much drama has grow with society away from its original form.
