Changes Throughout Society

Drama has made many changes throughout its existence and has helped to shape many different societies in many different ways. Drama began with ancient drama, worked its way up to medieval drama; now has crawled its way up to modern and contemporary drama and beyond. Today, drama of all structures are enjoyed leisurely and also for education purposes. Along the way drama has taken many forms, and the ability to illustrate different issues, classes, joys, and tragedies. Drama has changed even from the Shakespearean age and now has classifications such as romanticism, realism, and naturalism. For example, look at the differences between play’s such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare and Hedda Galber by Henrik Ibsen. These two plays portray many differences in context in contrasting from then to now and also; at the same time, they show many similarities between the individual characters.

From the Shakespearean age, with the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, it takes on the traditional ways of having the male gender be the dominating and manipulating figure in the story. Egeus, Hermia’s father, seems to possess many evils. Evils such as having control over whom his daugh


Throughout the play, Hedda is the character that needs to have complete control at all times. This concept, of a woman being in control, is very different from what most plays were like. As a rule, the woman was told what to do and when to do it. Another difference was that there is much more of a realistic plot shown in Hedda Gabler. This play takes place in a modern day setting as apposed the magical woods setting that is demonstrated in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Which is a play that portrays the tradition of a male dominating figure. Oberon, Egeus, and Theseus all have much dictatorship over the rest of the community in which they live. So it is obvious to see how much drama has grow with society away from its original form. Being able to emerge from the Shakespearean realm of imagination and fairy tale; to the realistic view of modernized plays demonstrating the reality of life is an incredible step forward.
