When Lindbergh was eighteen, he attended the University of Wisconsin where he studied mechanical engineering. During this time period, he became very interested in the field of aviation. He wanted to become a fighter pilot so he decided to join the United States Army in 1924. He accomplished his goal by graduating as the top pilot in his class. He was able to purchase his own airplane and used it to deliver mail from St. Louis to Chicago during the next six years (ThinkQuest). In his spare time, he performed as a stunt pilot during fairs. People perceived him as not being a very safe pilot (Two Legends of Aviation).

He was intelligent and willing to take risks to reach his goals. I think at some point in our lives, we all have to take a risk now or then in order to succeed.

On May 21, 1927, Charles Lindbergh flew from Roosevelt Field on Long Island to Le Bourget Airport in Paris. It took him a total of thirty-three and a half hours to fly across the Atlantic Ocean non-stop. Over one hundred thousand people showed up at the airport in Paris to greet him when they heard news that he had been spotted flying over Ireland. When he returned to the United States, there were several photographers wanting to get a picture of him. He began to be known as “Lucky Lindy” and the “Lone Eagle”. He became an international celebrity and hero. Calvin Coolidge, the President of the United States, presented Lindbergh with the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Congressional Medal of Honor for his accomplishment (Two Legends of Aviation).
