Christianity
Christianity came to the world not as a single religion but as a mingling of beliefs. Religions and pagan cults from ancient Mesopotamia, Greece and Rome influenced the development of this religion. It wasn’t easy for Christianity followers to become a strong religious group as it is today; they went through very harsh times, including being persecuted to death by the Romans. It was not until the year 313 that Constantine, a Roman Emperor, issued the Edict of Milan, a decree that legalized the religion in the Roman Empire. A patriarchal civilization of Mesopotamia called Hebrews or Jews is the founder of the Jewish religion, which at the same time gave rise to Christianity. Influences of Mesopotamian, Greek and Roman people are very crucial for the history of Christianity as a religion, an art and an architecture style. The history of the Mesopotamian people began in the fertile lands among the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. This civilization’s culture had a great impact on the Hebrew religion. Myths and traditions were filtered and refashioned to fit the needs of the Jewish religion (Monroe 135). It is believed that many stories and myths that formed part of this civilization’s culture gave shape and influenc
Still, little differences arise from the stories. In the “Epic of Gilgamesh” a harsh view of the gods is clearly seen, “Enlil heard the clamour and he said to the gods on the council, ‘The uproar of mankind and sleep is no longer possible by reason of the babel’. So the gods agreed to exterminate mankind.” On the other hand, the book of Genesis from the Hebrew bible talks about a more fair God that only punishes for sins, “Then the Lord saw the wickedness of man was great on earth...And the Lord said ‘I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land...” Mesopotamian polytheism reflected in the Epic of Gilgamesh while monotheism is found in the story from the book of Genesis. “So the gods (many gods) agreed to exterminate mankind” (Epic of Gilgamesh); “And the Lord (One God) said ‘ I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land’”(Genesis). To conclude, Mesopotamian, Greek and Roman cultures have had great influence upon Christianity to become a single religion. It was all these people beliefs, traditions, architecture and art styles what gave shape to what we know today as Christian religion, one of the most world-wide spread religions. Christianity started slowly and went through a lot of obstacles to become what it is today. Persecutions, deaths and crusades are just examples of the harsh lives that early Christians were obligated to live, until 313 when the religion was finally legalized by Emperor Constantine. After 313 Christianity grew and spread all over the world, and many Christianity divisions have also emerged. Catholics, Lutherans, Methodists and others form part of today’s Christianity, a little cult that begun many years ago from a little group of people from Mesopotamia.
