Civil War

The civil war one of the most historical events in history that shaped America. A war between our own country fighting and killing many lives. Thousands were lost in that war and many many more injured all due to slavery.

The Civil war was mainly started because of a lady named Harriet Beecher Stowe. When antislavery debates rose over the Compromise of 1850, Harriet began to write a story about slavery. In 1852 she published her novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. It was widely read in the United States and moved many to join the cause of abolition. The election of 1860 really heated things up because Abraham Lincoln won the election and he was against slavery. As soon as Lincoln won about a month later on December 20,1860 South Carolina seceded from the United States and other states joined until that were in the south and wanted slavery to be legal. During May 1-4 the Union army is defeated at the battle of Chancellorsville in Virginia. But they rebounded in June and July with 2 successes; the Battle of Gettysburg during July 1-3 in Pennsylvania, the capture of Vicksburg which helped the North gain control of the Mississippi River on July 4. The year ended as the Union army defeats the Confederates at The Battle of Chattanooga on November 23-25.

During the month of May and June battles at the Wilderness in Virginia, Spotsylvania in Virginia, and Cold Harbor also in Virginia resulted in heavy losses for the North. As Grant and Lee settled into siege along the Petersburg-Richmond lines, Union victories at Mobile Bay in late August, at Atlanta in early September, and in the Shenandoah Valley in September and October raised Northern hope. The year ended with Union victories at Franklin and Nashville, Tennessee, in November and December.
