Cognitive Development Study

The aim of this investigation is to observe and report on a child that attends Calvary Christian College, and asses their relative stage of development as determined by Jean Piaget.

The child being studied in this investigation, CH4, is a preschool student currently attending Calvary Christian College. He is an outgoing child and is quite intelligent.

The subject, CH4, attends Calvary Christian College, a small private school. The school’s mission is to provide a distinctly Christian education, to strengthen the family and help prepare students to meet the challenges of life.

2:2 – PIAGET’S THEORY OF COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT

Jean Piaget was a famous Swedish psychologist whose studies and theories on cognitive development have had a major impact on child psychology. Piaget suggested that children go through four separate stages in a fixed order that is universal in all children. These stages are:

1. Sensorimotor…………………………………………...……0-2 years

2. Preoperational…………………………………………….…2-7 years

a. Preconceptual……………………â

4. Formal Operations………………………………………...11-15 years

Problem: The subject CH4 was presented with two identical square ‘farms’. As the experimenter placed one haystack on one of the farms, CH4 was asked to do the same to the other farm, until each farm had an equal amount of 6 haystacks. CH4 was then asked which of the farms had more grass area (see Appendix I).

According to Piaget’s theory of cognitive development, the subject CH4 will be in the pre-operational stage of development, with some preconceptual thought and possibly showing signs of intuitive thought. It is likely that CH4 will not yet understand the concepts of conservation or reversibility and identity.

Subject’s response: The experimenter’s farm has more grass area.

The tests presented to the subject CH4 were specifically chosen and developed in order to determine the operational level of the subject. This included testing the child’s perception of conservation, egocentrism, reversibility and identity.
