Compare and Contrast Vivre Sa Vie (My Life to Live) and Emporte-Moi (Set Me Free)
The films Vivre Sa Vie (My Life to Live) and Emporte-Moi (Set Me Free), are very similar when looking at the two main characters of the films, Nana and Hanna. However, the events and people surrounding the characters are different, to catch these similarities and differences throughout the second film (Emporte-Moi) it is imperative that the first film (Vivre Sa Vie) has been seen. The similarity is sprung when Hanna watches Vivre Sa Vie for the first time. Almost instantly she idolizes the main character Nana and it is then that Hanna’s life begins to parallel Nana’s. Both are on a search for their own identity separate from the outside forces that are trying to control them. In the film Emporte-Moi, Hanna comes from a difficult household where her parents seem to love each other but seem hate each other just as much, if not more. Hanna’s father, an unpublished poet with no other work, and cannot find a way to show his family love. Instead he is very controlling of his family. He forces Hanna to cut her hair short like a boys. He makes his wife type his works at night. Her mother is over worked, working a seamstress during the day and a typist at night for Hanna’s father. While at the same time she is very depr
Hanna’s search for identity truly begins when she first sees Vivre Sa Vie. Hanna’s life often parallels Nana’s life. As Hanna begins to take control of her own life she often envisions herself as Nana. She does and tries many of the same things as Nana did. She tires smoking, puffing and standing just as Nana did. At her brother’s band practice, she dances about, twisting and turning just like Nana did in the bar. Hanna even pretends that she is hearing the same music as Nana does while she dances. When Hanna runs away, she becomes a prostitute for a night, she even struggles and turns her head so the man cannot kiss her, just as Nana did when she first became a prostitute. This is obvious because of the cutting from Hanna’s mimic actions in Emporte-Moi, to Nana’s orignal actions in Vivre Sa Vie. As Hanna experiences all these things we also see Nana go through the same experience. The second is at Hanna’s brothers band pratice, where she mimics Nana dancing in the bar. When Nana is dancing at the bar, it a once of her true free moments in the movie. She is happy smiling, laughting, not caring what others are thinking, and for once she is attracting the attention of a man who is not trying to buy her. When Hanna dances she also is at one of her truly free moments. She has no worries right then, she is not caring what other people think of her, she is not stressed about her father and mother, she is having a good time. This is only understandable having watched Vivre Sa Vie. If the movie has been watched the connection between the feelings from Nana to Hanna would be lost, making the entire scene with the band and Hanna’s dance pointless. All that would be understood is that Hanna is dancing to her brother’s band pretending to be that one lady from the movie she saw. Which does enforce the point that she idolizes Nana, but the meanings and emoti! In the beginning of Vivre Sa Vie Nana’s life seems out of control, she is struggling to become an actress and looking for help wherever she can get it. She is always looking for money for other people. Finally she feels she has taken control of her own life when she falls in to prostitution. Only then does she feel responsible for her own actions, good or bad, she is responsible. She feels she is living her own life, doing the crazy things that she does. Just as Hanna does in the later movie, she begins getting in to some crazy behavior and finally she feels she has began living her own life. The forth is the scene where Hanna, becomes a prostitute for the night. Just as Nana does her first night, Hanna turns her head, struggling so not to let him kiss her on the mouth. Something in Hanna’s head finally clicks and she tries to run away screaming, “ I changed my mind, I changed my mind.” But it is too late and she is forced in to a night of prostitution. This is the turning point in Hanna’s life. It is a turning point in Nana’s life. After Nana’s first night as I prostitute she, falls deeper in to prostitution and to the illusion that she is in complete control and responsible for her own life. For Hanna this turning point is the total opposite and she finally understand what her teacher was trying to tell he earlier, the true message of Nana in
