Computer Crimes

Times have changed and the world of technology is growing. These new times are also bringing new crimes. The crimes that I am talking about are crimes committed with computers. Computer crimes started in the early 1970’s and have become more and more prevalent. The reason computer crimes have increased is because of the popularity of the internet and the fact that people are becoming more and more computer literate. Many types of crimes are done on the computer. The most common crimes committed on the Internet are: Forgery (of E-mail), assault (on your Web site, E-mail box, or computer system), fraud (cyber scams), and robbery (theft of valuable information). Computer crimes can be done against the government, companies, and even everyday people. In my paper I will discuss computer crimes dealing the government, computer stalking, and computer criminals.

When some commits a crime against the Government , it effects the whole country. In 1995, the Internal Revenue Service instituted new regulations on electronic tax filing and returns. The reason for this action was to stop a rash of fraud that cost tax payers million of dollars in 1994. Returns that were filed using the computer turn

In conclusion, new crimes have developed along with the new times. Computer crimes are in full sweep and anyone who has access to a computer can become a computer criminal. Hackers and crackers are types of criminal that commit computer crimes. The difference between hackers and cracker are that they have totally different intentions. Hacker break into computers for the challenge, while crackers have malicious intentions of doing harm to the computer. I talked about various crime that are committed using the computer; one is which is computer stalking. Computer stalking is usually committed by a loner who starts off wanting a friendship then end up stalking individuals. The government us also a target for many criminals. Today, more and more terrorist are becoming computer literate. The terrorist are using the computer to destroy our government. I also learned that there are a variety of techniques that criminals use to break into computer such as: a trapdoor, round down, salami, masquerading, and eavesdropping. I feel that this term paper has allowed me to explore the awful crimes that go on through the computer. When the computer was created, no on would have thought that so many crimes evolve form its creation. Law are now being passed, which will hopefully start to defer future crimes from being committed.

One very frightening computer criminal that is emerging rapidly is the “cyberstalker.” The most disturbing of these criminals are the pedophiles that surf chat rooms looking to prey on young children. Pedophiles develop a relationship with the child and then seek to meet the child in person to pursue sexual intentions. Recognizing the seriousness of this problem, chatrooms are now being policed by cybercops. The cybercop plays the role of a naïve child and plans a meeting with the suspected pedophile to gain an arrest. Another type of stalker that are suspected to be seen more in the future are the emotional disturbed loner. The loner first plays the role of the friend to unsuspecting Internet users, but the loner soon develop an obsession. If the Internet user gives out personal information, the loner may use the information to destroy the person. Vengeance can take many forms, from ruining credit records and charging multiple purchases to the victim to creating criminal records and sending letters to employers informing them of the "shady background" of the victim. In the twenty-first century, with access to the Internet available to all and information from data banks networked into dossiers reserved for "official
