Barkas is a very beneficial book when it comes to learning how to manage your time more efficiently so that one can still enjoy the more pleasurable things in life. Creative Time Management shows how to manage personal and work time, the obstacles to effective time management, how to become organized and more effective, how to improve your time at work, how to save time on household chores, how to improve your personal time management, and how time management works.

The first chapter shows how to manage your personal and work time. Barkas uses the “ABC Approach” to show how to manage your time effectively. “A” is knowing what you’ve got which means knowing what your current work and personal responsibilities are. “B” is knowing what you want which means having specific daily and long-term goals. “C” is using “A” and “B” so you get what you want which means that you apply the questions of who, what, where, when, why, and how to your thoughts and actions. Another topic Barkas covers is how to improve your time at work. The first step is understanding your work environment and most work environments differ from others. One way to improve your time at work is to become more efficient. For example instead of calling someone back the same day you could call them the next day if the call is not of great importance. Another way to improve your time at work is to have the ability to work well with others. Make sure you have good relationships with all personnel all the way up to and including your superiors. Work and school related goals are a very important concept in how to improve your time at work or school. You must have the ability to plan for the long-term future. One important way to check up on those girls is to use progress reports so that you can monitor your goals and whether you have achieved them or not. The final aspect of improving your work time is to measure your success. There are many different ways to measure success, such as in dollars and cents, by promotions, or in public recognition.

The next section of the book deals with obstacles to effective time management. Barkas calls the main obstacles “time wasters”. The first of the “time wasters” is doing too much at once. The rule of thumb is if you think you have too many things to do, you’re probably right. In order to learn not to do too much at once there are two rules: doing fewer things at any one time and doing one thing at a time. The next “time waster” is the inability to say “no”. Most people have a problem with saying “no’ because they try to please everyone instead of doing what would please themselves. Another “time waster” and probably the most popular is procrastination. Barkas lists five solutions to procrastinating which are: developing a procrastination list so you can pinpoint when you are procrastinating, and the consequences; making the priority task that you are procrastinating about the first job of the day; rewarding yourself for accomplishing a desired task; learning how to be a “creative” procrastinator; and allowing for delays so that you have the energy to complete the task at hand. Complaining is another one of Barkas’s “time wasters”. Barkas believes that complaining not only wastes your time, but also creates a poor image of what you are like. There
