The youth of Germany was the future and the young people were very important in Hitler’s grand plan. Children joined for both positive and negative reasons. The fact the Hitler Youth offered them a variety of activities, plus a chance to socialize and mix was a positive reason to join. For girls in particular, it was a way to escape the narrow opportunities and oppressive home life. Ironically girls quickly joined the ranks of the female branch League of German Maidens (BDM) even though it focused on domesticity. In these groups each sex was prepared for its respective duties in the Third Reich. Boys were trained to be physically strong and have military skills necessary for war while girls were prepared for their lives as mothers. Both groups also enjoyed leisure activities such as camps and hikes with many accounts of children describing the Hitler Youth as an enjoyable thing while others (see source A) saw it as strict with rigorous routine.(source B).

1. The whole German youth inside the region of the Reich are incorporated into the Hitler Youth. (With this decree, Hitler violated his Concordat with the Vatican not to absorb Catholic youth groups.)

The Hitler Youth program had three different phases, the early years (1925-32) when they had to compete with other youth groups; the Government years (1933-39) when independent groups were suppressed and young Germans were indoctrinated in preparation for the War; and finally the War years (1940-45) when the Hitler Youth played an important part, including the formation of combat units.

This extract from Hitler’s autobiographical text ‘Mein Kampf’ states simply that if the ultimate objectives of Nazism were to be realized then the youth; the fathers and mothers of the future, would have to be raised as a racially proud generation determined to weed out impurities and the ‘racially inferior’ such as the Jews. This in turn will create a racially pure ‘master race’ capable of ruling Europe.
