Under the Tarnished Dome

Under the Tarnished Dome is a book about Coach Lou Holtz written by Don Yeager and Doug Looney. Holtz, the University of Notre Dame football coach, has been a proven winner in the game of football. He has earned head coaching jobs at schools such as, William and Mary, North Carolina State University, Arkansas University, Minnesota, and Notre Dame; all the football programs were suffering before Holtz took over their helms. Holtz has an uncanny way of turning programs around in a hurry, some say he is a “miracle worker” and some question his method to success.

Under the Tarnished Dome reveals the dark side of his methods, the physical and mental abuse of his athletes, his treatment to injured players and his failure to punish players for steroid abuse will be looked at in this paper. This paper will concern itself primarily with Coach Holtz at the University of Notre Dame. It will talk of the strong tradition at Notre Dame and Coach Holtz.

Ninety miles east of Chicago in South Bend, Indiana; is located a university which costs around $18,000 a year to attend. Less than 10,000 students are enrolled which includes 2,000 graduate students. You guessed it the University of Notre Dame. Ever since the days of Knute Rockne,

“Win one for the Gipper” has become five of the most popular words in Notre Dame football. Those words were spoken by George Gipp one of the most outstanding running backs in Irish history. Gipp died at age twenty-five, on December 14, 1920 of strep throat , while on his deathbed he spoke to Coach Rockne these emotional words “I’ve got to go, Rock. It’s all right. I’m not afraid. Sometime, Rock, when the team is up against it, when things are wrong and the breaks are beating the boys -- tell them to go in there with all they got and win just one for the Gipper. I don’t know where I’ll be then , Rock. But I’ll know about it, and I’ll be happy.” Eight years later, Rockne spoke the words of George Gipp to an underdog Notre Dame club facing a powerful Army unit. On that day an Inspired Notre Dame team upset the Army Cadets, 12-6.

ed first round draft choice and claims that he lost a million dollars because he got drafted so late.

To add to Notre Dame’s Tradition, eight times a member of the Irish Football program has won the prestigious Heisman Trophy award. Also Notre Dame boast of players such as : Paul Horning, Joe Theismann, Bob Crable, Tim Brown and the great Joe Montana. As you can see Irish faculty, players, coaches, alumni, and fans have

If anything can bring out the worst in Lou Holtz its injuries. Holtz and team physicians go round and round on this issue. Holtz once told Dr. Rob Hunter “If they are hurt, I do not want to know their *censored*in’ names.” The silent treatment was Holtz remedy for injured players, he would make the players feel like outcasts and try to get them to come back before they should. Holtz would walk through the training room before practice in order to let everybody know that he is going to practice today. One particular instance of Holtz’s refusal to accept injured players dealt with Tony Smith, a Notre Dame wide reciever. Smith had broken a bone in his wrist with only three games remaining in the season, Holtz insisted that he wait for the season to end before Smith gets surgery on his wrist. To make a long story short, Smith only got drafted to the NFL in the sixth round that spring because he was a medical risk due to the poor treatment of his wrist. Smith was a project!
