Doughboys

In the year 1914, almost all of Europe broke out in the First World War that the world had ever seen. This was a war between the major alliances of Europe that included Britain, Russia, Germany, France, and Austria-Hungry. But where did America fall into this big picture of destruction and despair, and who was going to help win the war for the allies?

After the Germans taunted America into the war, there was a lot of worry about whether or not they could build up an army that was large enough, and skilled enough to make a difference in the war. This is where the Doughboys or American Expeditionary Force comes in. These were the brave men that occupied France and fought along with the allies against the invading German armies. This was not the original plan for the AEF. President Wilson had originally planned to scare the Germans out of the war by declaring war on them; the fighting was going to be left up to the allied forces. The idea of even being able to raise an army in time was thought to be impractical at the time and how advanced the Germans had run their campaign. It was thought that American efforts were best if they were left to supplying ammunition, supplies, and money (ww1.com).

The use of artillery in World War 1 was a very important factor in determining who was going to win the war. The newest , and most effective, invention on the battle field was the tank. This mobile piece of armor had a wide range of uses that not all of the countries fighting took full advantage of. For instance the French had for seen the tank an a type of mobile artillery that could be used to help the advancing infantry. They had used the light tanks to move forward with the infantry to help combat the enemy while their larger armor stayed back to give them fire support.

John “Black Jack” Pershing was by no means a military genius, but nonetheless he was the leader of the AEF. It at times appeared that he lacked the understanding of how to place his troops in relation to the enemy. These mistakes had caused many more casualties than had been needed to accomplish a mission. But, this was not all completely on Pershing’s head. A lot of the blame could have gone on the inexperience of the troops and the lack of transportation that was provided to him. But if it were not for the occupation of Pershing’s troops on the front lines then the Germans would most defiantly have won the war (Sal).

Moral was defiantly an important factor in winning the war and any other wars but you don’t win a war by just making the other guy want to quit, you have to fight, kill, and die. At the time the AEF planners had ready some 200,000 beds for fallen soldiers and in the advanced hospitals they had 25,000. At the time of the Armistice there were nearly 145,000 AEF soldiers that were hospitalized (ww1.com). It was written that during the Chateau-Thierry campaign by the Chief surgeon of the First Army Corp of the American E. F. that after the battles fought by the AEF, the fields would be littered with the bodies of men and animals and would remain there for days after the battles. In the persisting heat of the day it was said that the smell of the rotting bodies was terrible but even worse were the thousands of flying insects that swarmed over the dead. It was even written that the bodies of man and animal soon became a mass of maggots and flies that soon infested the area sur!

The British on the other hand had the idea to use the larger tanks and armor to break throught the enemies barbed wire
