Dream

When people think of the “American Dream” they generally think a middle class, well-off family in a beautiful home with a couple of kids and maybe a dog. Both Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun and Author Miller’s Death of A Salesman deal with the concept of having a dream and trying to achieve it. In some sense both families have the same dream, a dream to be successful and happy, and the dream to have money. But the families face many different obstacles that they must overcome. Some are physical and some are mental or emotional struggles. Also in both plays, each member of the family has their own personal dream and sometimes struggle to realize that the family is the most important symbol in a home. Arthur Miller's tragic drama Death of A Salesman is the portrayal of the longing for the “American dream”, an extreme craving for success and superior status in a world otherwise fruitless. At the beginning of the play, Miller establishes Willy Loman as a troubled and misguided man; at heart a salesman and a dreamer with a preoccupation with success. However, it is equally apparent that Willy is not a successful man. Although in his sixties, he is still a traveling salesman that clings only to his dreams and ideals. There is a strong core of resentment within Willy, whose actions assume a more glorious and idealized past. Willy’s only dream now is for his sons to live the life he always wanted; the life of a successful business man, with a family and a nice home. Linda, Willy’s wife, has a similar longing for an idealized past, but has learned to suppress her dreams and her dissatisfaction with her husband and sons. Miller indicates that she is a woman with deep regrets about her life; she must continually reconcile her husband with her sons, and support a man who has failed in his life's endeavor without any hope for pursuing whatever dreams she may have had.
