Eating Disorders

Eating disorder prevention is an integral part of keeping the body healthy. As defined by the Eating Disorders Awareness and Prevention, Inc., prevention is “is any systematic attempt to change the circumstances that promote, sustain, or intensify problems” (Taylor, 1999). There are different levels of prevention, such as primary and secondary. Secondary prevention has to do with dealing with the problem in the early stages of development before it gets out of hand. The prevention that is necessary to curb eating disorders is primary. Primary prevention is teaching healthful ways of living and changing the poor health habits that may plague a person (Taylor, 1999). Such preventative measures may be school-based or community-based programs.

It is no wonder why prevention of eating disorders is needed. With all of the negative influences of what body types “should” be, such as what is portrayed in the media, everyone is impacted. Those most heavily influenced are young, impressionable children. The role of a health educator in the implementation of eating disorder prevention is very large. I believe the number one goal of prevention is through education. It is necessary for the educator themselves to be adequately trained in all aspects of eating disorders. There are millions of people in the United States that are suffering from either anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating. As an educator, I should be well versed in all aspects of those three disorders. I need to be familiar with signs of the disorders, such as certain behavioral factors. Above all, I should be able to communicate the prevention methods adequately to whomever I am addressing, whether it be young children or teens.

As with anorexia, less than half of those that seek treatment fully recover and about one third persist with their unhealthy habits. Therefore, prevention of the disease would be a better route.

Eating disorder prevention programs should be a part of every community. There is sufficient proof that these primary prevention programs will pay off in the long run. In the case of the short term Girl Scout program, there were positive outcomes that paved the way for a long-term program that would be more beneficial and with longer lasting results. The school-based program is a good idea, but is only efficient if the school staff is properly trained in awareness and prevention and also if the students have access to counseling if they begin to have a preoccupation with weight. Prevention is the best way to put an end to the eating disorders that plague our nation.

To be effective, not only should the individual students be targeted, the whole school environment should take on the preventative measures as well. For that to occur, many steps are taken.
