England's Colonization in North America

England’s Colonization in North America

England’s colonization in North America first started in 1497. In 1497 John Cabot claimed the basis of England’s land in North America. The land that was claimed could not be colonized until the early 1600’s because of Spain’s control of ocean travel and trade. Spain was the powerhouse on the 16th century. It wasn’t until 1588 that England would start to consider colonization. Hostility existed between Spain and England over trade and colonization. On August 8th, 1588 English defeated Spain in the Spanish Armada. England was now able to think about colonization on the North American coastline.

Two main companies would start the colonization to North America. These companies were the Plymouth Company and the London Company. The Plymouth Company was founded in 1606 by a group of puritanical people. The Plymouth companies head quarters were in Bristol, England. The Plymouth Company would need a charter to travel and colonize in North America. Charters were very hard to create and because of this the Plymouth Company purchased their charter from the Muscovey Company. The Muscovey had financed the trips of John Cabot. Virginia is the exception to the rule in colonization. Virginia was colonized not due to England’s domestic problems but more as a matter of saving face for James I. In 1607, The Gunpowder Plot occurred in England. The Gunpowder Plot was an attempt to blow up the parliament building by Catholics with Spanish support. James I was friendly with Catholics and this whole situation didn’t look good on his part. James I even renewed The London Company’s charter by giving them 200 miles of land North and South of Virginia, and all land West of the Atlantic Ocean. Although, in 1624 the London Company goes bankrupt and Virginia became a royal colony, or in direct control of England.

Charles II becomes the King of England from 1660 to 1685. Under the ruling of Charles II England thrives. Stability is restored in England to the religious, political, and the economic scene. From 1680 and on, fewer people immigrate to the colonies from England because now there are no domestic problems. England starts to focus on trade and becomes the Lender. The board of trade starts using salutary neglect in which England becomes a commercial empire. The colonies are now able to borrow money from the mother country. Now that the colonies have a source of money it will allow them to make money.

Between 1635 and 1640 there were strong conflicts between the colonists and the Native Indians. The Indians began to feel threatened due to the rapid expansion of the white man. The English colonists took over a lot of Native American land. Natives had to obey Puritan laws such as no fishing or hunting on the Sabbath day. Due to this the Pequot war broke out in 1635. Also, in 1675 King Philips War broke out in which Natives attacked and burned outlying settlements of New England.

Th Plymouth Companies colonization starts in 1606 when George Pophom makes and attempt to reach Maine but fails. In 1619, Edmund George successfully makes it to Maine and explores the coastline. The f
